Rainforest Story is a concept for a mobile application that utilizes augmented reality to enhance the Cal Academy’s rainforest exhibit. The idea was based on our observation that while museum visits are engaging, they can also be full of missed educational opportunities when visitors don’t read exhibit cards or make the connections intended by exhibit designers. Specifically, we felt that in the rainforest exhibit, the story of the connectedness of creatures was lost because of the practical need to keep animals in separate display cases. We utilized the “just-in-time” and situated nature of mobile technology as a way to tell this story, help conceptually orient visitors, and enrich the museum experience.
